Childline Zimbabwe has an established network of Drop-In Centres in all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe. We operate the 116 Freephone Helpline which is reachable from any phone on any network, anywhere in Zimbabwe. The Drop-in Centres operate normal working hours, from 8:30am till 4:30pm from Mondays to Fridays. The Drop-in Centres provide face-to-face counseling to children and community members who “walk-in” to the centre. The Drop-in Centres are child-friendly spaces where children of all ages are able to use the facilities of the centre to play and receive information, advice and counseling.
Child-friendly, confidential face-to-face counseling is offered to children and community members at the Childline Drop-in Centres. Childline operates 34 community-based Drop-in Centres across Zimbabwe to enable those children without access to a phone to access Childline’s confidential counseling and psychosocial support services (PSS). These centres are operated by qualified Social Workers or Counsellors and are supported by trained community volunteer counselors. In addition to counseling “walk-ins” the Drop-in Centre Social Worker and community volunteer counselors also conduct follow-up home visits in their local district on reports of child abuse and neglect reported to the national 116 Helpline or via the Free Postal Service and Social media platforms.
The Social Worker and community volunteer counselors then provide ongoing counseling to their child and family/ caregivers to ensure their healthy development into adulthood. This counseling often takes place where the child is, either at their home, school or another venue identified by the child and family as a safe counseling environment. Often Childline will provide this support over a long period of time, monitoring the progress of the child to ensure their future safety and appropriate care and therefore healthy development into adulthood.
